New Beginnings Course

 

“New Beginnings” is a newly created compact course solely to provide the opportunity for mature and non-traditional learners looking for a second chance to study academically and progress further.

 

What is this course about?

On this course you will have the opportunity to develop and enhance existing skills, knowledge and academic experiences; this will enable you to make new, exciting but informed choices regarding the direction you wish for your future to take. New Beginnings, will help utilise all those skills you already have and gained from your previous home, work and social lives to prepare you for study at higher and/or degree levels.

Skills you will learn whilst studying on this; or any of the courses we offer, is how to:

  • Be an effective learner.
  • Read analytically.
  • Think critically.
  • Research effectively.
  • Research academically any topic.

 

What this course will give you?

  • Develop your academic reading, writing and thinking skills in preparation for undergraduate study.
  • Develop your confidence and independence to transform your life, employability and career options.
  • Develop the ability to fit your studies around your existing life, home and family commitments.

 

 

Who is this course designed for?

Successfully enrolled students on our “New Beginnings” course will progress, but at their own pace. Eventually the progression will lead to a variety of new course(s) at an institution of their choice or into permanent employment that has educational training included.

 

What criteria/qualifications do I need to apply?

GCSE C grade in both Mathematics and English Language. (Otherwise students should be prepared to incorporate these into your study course.)

Extended Project

All students that enrol on our compulsory courses will have the opportunity to undertake extended project courses of their own choice. These courses have been chosen and developed in order to enhance our student’s experiences at Chertsey College. These courses will enhance skills that can be applied to working life or developed through to Higher Education. The classes that each individual selects will enable students to explore an area of personal interest outside of their main programme of study. This course incorporates written projects, presentations and a portfolio of work which will allow students to observe their personal progress without taking a formal examination and therefore attendance is a priority throughout the undertaking of the course.

English

 

English Functional Skills (Level 1 and 2)

 

This course has been developed for those who wish to improve their reading and writing skills alongside gaining confidence in their speaking skills. Our tutors will dedicate their time in improving grammar, punctuation, spelling, learning letter structure and the basics of how to fill in forms etc. Presentation and group speaking skills will be enhanced and developed in order to help build each students confidence.

 

GCSE English Language

 

English Language GCSE is a key qualification that is required to progress through education and employment. This course will allow each individual to explore the construction and context of literary genres. Students will be encouraged to explore the writer’s intentions for each literary piece of work, the effects that they achieve and how they engage the reader.

 

GCSE English Literature

 

English Literature GCSE has been developed to nurture and grow student’s analytical skills of Shakespeare, 19th century novels, post-1914 prose fiction and drama and poetry.

 

 

Science

 

GCSE Combined Science: Trilogy

 

This course will give students an insight into the contemporary world of science, by studying Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Students will learn about the core concepts, such as biological genetics, the laws of chemistry and the understandings of the universe. Through the undertaking of this course students will develop the numerical, analytical and practical skills of collecting and influencing data; students will also learn how to apply their knowledge and solve problems in a range of contexts.

 

Maths

 

Maths Functional Skills (Level 1 and 2)

 

This course with help prepare each individual for GCSE standard and will contribute to the learner’s knowledge of everyday maths. Our tutors will strive to help each individual student gain this qualification in order for them to feel more confident working with numbers and real life maths problems; and aid students to gain this qualification so that they may progress.

 

GCSE Maths

 

 

This course is suitable for students who wish to gain this qualification for the first time or for those who wish to improve on previous attempts at the Maths GCSE. Gaining the Maths GCSE qualification will help you progress with education and employment. This course will cover algebra, percentages, shapes, averages, fractions and probability.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Information and Communication Technology

 

 

Information and Communication Technology Functional Skills (Level 1 and 2)

 

Students will learn the basic creativity that can be explored via interactive entertainment products and websites; how data can be managed through the creation of spreadsheets and databases and the technical theory used in order to build and configure computers. Learners will be able to use the skills gained and apply these to real-life case studies and theoretical studies.
